Huai Nam Dang National Park

It was formerly know as an area of Doi Sam Muen highland development project which was initited by His Majesty the King to solve the problem of forest encroachment and poaching, as well as to enhance the lives of the local hilltribe people. As this area is filled with attractive natural condition and virginal forests provided vital watersheds, Huai Nam Dang was declared the 81st national park of Thailand by the Royal Forest Department on 14 August 1995.
Huai Nam Dang National Park covers four districts : Mae Taeng, Chiang Dao, and Wiang Haeng in Chiang Mai province including Pai district in Mae Hong Son province, covering an area of approximately 1,247 square kilometres. Later on it was designated as the National Park for commemorating 100th year establishment of the Royal Forest Department and also for the celebration of His Majesty the King’s 50th year on the throne.

Geographical Features
Huai Nam Dang National Park is situated on top of the ridge of hills and the same range as Chiang Dao mountain range. The highest peak-Doi Chang peak (at 1,962 metres above sea level) is the vital source of important streams which flow into the Pai river, Ping river, and Taeng river.

Weather Condition
The climate is comfortably pleasant. The average year-round temperature is 20๐c, dropping to 8๐c in October to February and soaring to 12-28๐c on March to April. The wettest months being May to September.

Varieties of Plants and Wild Animals
The healthy natural condition of Huai Nam Dang National Park is a matrix of highly diverse habitat types. Main plants found in this park are Hopea sp., Dipterocarpus spp., Tectona grandis (Teak), Pterocarpus macrocarpus, Michelia floribunda, Pinus kesiya, Pinus merkusii, and orchids especially, Dendrobium infundibulum which charmingly blooms during January to March. Many wild animals dwelling in this richest forest are elephants and some rare animals such as Salamanders.

By Car
Start at Chiang Mai province. Huai Nam Dang National Park is situated on the road number 1095 at Km. 65-66. It located about 109 kilometers northwest of Chiang Mai on the way to Mae Hong Son province. Several buses leave Chiang Mai’s buses station each day and cover the journey in about three hours.
For private car, take road number 107 north about 37 kilometers to Mae Malai Market, from where the road number 1095 turns left and head for the hills for about 65 kilometers. Then a right turn leads just 6 kilometers from the park checkpoint to the Headquarter.

Doi Gew Lom Viewpoint
Doi Gew Lom Viewpoint this viewpoint is well-know among Thai and foreign visitors who come here to see a spectacular sea of mist collects in the valley as well as various types of colourful flowers. Beside, this place situates Silver Orchids Palace, the palace of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana. Moreover, there are two nature trails: Ueang Ngoen Nature Trail and Chom Doi Nature Trail. Each trail covers a distance of approximately 1.5 kilometers.

Doi Chang Viewpoint
Doi Chang Viewpoint this highest viewpoint offers delightful view of orchid hanging from trees branch or trees top. This place deserves to be a source for nature study. It is in the north of Doi Gew Lom Viewpoint.

Lam Nam Mae Taeng Lam Nam Mae Taeng The bank of Mae Taeng river are surrounded by evergreen forest with plenty of plants birds. White-water rafting along this current can be an enriching and exciting experience not easily forgotten. The trip start from Pong Duead Hot Spring through the short route of trekking tour to Ban Pang Pa Kha (7 km.) or Ban Pa Khao Lam (9 km.). The rafting take about 3-4 hours and ends at Ban Sop Kai.

Tha Pai Hot Well
Tha Pai Hot Well the boiling water bubbles from the well. Its heat is about 80 degrees Celsius. This boiling water gathers and becoming a vast hot current with clouds of stream all over the area. The Pai Hot Well located about 30 kilometers from the park Headquarters. It is in Tambol Mae Hee, Amphur Pai Mae Hong Son province.


Pong Duet Hot Spring
Pong Duet Hot Spring, there are 3-4 big hot spring and some small and scattering all over the area. Here water erupts from geysers in a small stream, creating clouds of stream in the woodland. Sometimes, the hot water erupts as high as 2 meters. The temperature of water is about 90-99 degrees Celsius. Weather Condition

The weather at the National Park can be divided into 3 seasons including rainy season (May-October), when it rains heavily in September, winter (November-February), when the weather is cool and ideal for travelling, and summer (March-April), when the weather is rather hot.

Varieties of Plants and Wild Animals
There are a variety of forests covering the whole areas of the National Park, including virgin forests, arid, evergreen forests, pinery, timber forests, and mixed forests, depending on the altitude of the areas. Major plants include teak, rubber trees, Leguminosae (Pradoo), Michelia Alba, Pinus Merkusii Jungh (two-leaf pines), different kinds of Lithocarpus Cantleyanus (Kor), moss, ferns, orchids, etc.
Due to its abundance of forests, varieties of plants, and different altitudes of the areas (300-1,834 meters), the National Park has become the source of foods and dwelling places for different kinds of wild animals including Muntiacus Muntjak, wild boars, gorals, porcupines, wild rabbits, monkeys, masked palm civets, squirrels, tree shrews, and different kinds of birds such as White-rumped Shama, turtle doves, hawks, while fowls, etc.

Beautiful Nature

Huai Sai Khao Waterfall
Huai Sai Khao Waterfall is a 3-step, small-sized waterfall, originated from Sai Khao Gulley. The Waterfall is situated approximately 300 meters away from the National Park’s office. In summer, the Waterfall rather dries up.

Doi Wiang Pha Waterfall
Doi Wiang Pha Waterfall is approximately 18 meters high, originated from Maetalob Gulley and situated approximately 8 kilometers away from the National Park’s office.

Mae Fangluang Waterfall
Mae Fangluang Waterfall is approximately 10 meters high, situated approximately 10 kilometers away from the National Park’s Protection Unit No. Vor.Phor.1 (Hua Fai).

Doi Wiang Pha Sightseeing Spot
Tourists may experience the natural charms of mountain ranges at dawn and in the twilight. In winter, the weather is coal and foggy in the morning. The sightseeing spot is situated approximately 30 kilometers away from the National Park’s Protection Unit No. Vor.Phor.1 (Hua Fai).

Mae Tho National Park is situated between the northern latitudes of 18o 07' - 18o 29' and the eastern longitudes of 98o 8.5' - 98o 24' . The National Park’s headquarters is located at the Water Source Development Unit 6 (Doi Mae Tho), Ban Lao-li, Mu 9 (separated from Ban Maetho Mu 10), Tambon Bosali, Hot District, Chiang Mai Province.
The geographical features of the National Park consist of steep mountains (400-1,699 meters above the medium sea level), extending northwards in the same mountain range of Doi Inthanon. Mountains in the northern part of the area are about 20%-40% steeper than those in the southern part. The average altitude of the area is 1,000 meters above the medium sea level. Doi Kio Rai-mong is the highest mountaintop (1,699 meters above the medium sea level), located at Ban Pang Hin-fon, Mae-Chaem District. Meanwhile, the National Park’s office is located at the approximate altitude of 1,200 meters above the medium sea level.

พืชพื้นล่างประกอบด้วย หญ้าคมบาง ถั่วแระป่า ค้างคาวดิน สาบหมา เป็นต้น ป่าเบญจพรรณ พบโดยทั่วไปสลับกับป่าดิบเขา พันธุ์ไม้ที่สำคัญได้แก่ สัก แดง ประดู่ ตะแบก เสลา ตะเคียนหนู ยาง พืชพื้นล่างประกอบด้วยพวกไม้ไผ่และหญ้า ป่าสนเขาและป่าเต็งรัง พบโดยทั่วไปส่วนใหญ่จะอยู่ในพื้นที่อำเภอฮอด จะเห็นป่าสนเขาขึ้นปะปนกับป่าเต็งรัง
พันธุ์ไม้ที่สำคัญได้แก่ สนสามใบ ก่อ เหมือด รักใหญ่ เต็ง รัง เหียง พลวง พืชพื้นล่างประกอบด้วย หญ้าเพ็ก ไผ่โจด และหญ้าอื่นๆ

The average year-round highest temperature is 27oC and the average year-round lowest temperature is 8oC. And the average rainfall at the National Park is 1,030 mm/year.

Varieties of Plants and Wild Animals
There are various kinds of forests and plants within the areas of the National Park, including tropical evergreen forests of which major plants include Ironwood, rubber trees, Michelia Alba, Indian Mahogany, Mangifera Caloneura Kurz (wild mango), Therm, Garuga Pinnata (Ta-kram), Alstonia Scholaris (Teen Ped), and lower plants include Takran Mhaktao, Ploo-din, Kreu-tuay, and Gastrochilus Pandurata (Kra-chai); virgin forests of which major plants include Quercus Kerril Craib (Kor-pae), Kor-duan, Castanopsis Cerebrina (Kor-tamoo), Red zebra wood (Rak-yai), Aromadendron Elegans Bl., and lower plants include Carex Baccans Nees (Ya-kombang), pigeon peas, Aglaia Pirifera (Kangkao-din), Saab-ma, etc.; mixed forests of which major plants include teaks, Xylia Xylocarpa (redwood plants), Leguminosae (Pradoo), Lagerstroemia (Tabaek), Lagerstroemia Tomentosa Presl. (Se-lah), Anogeissus Acuminata Wall. (Takien Noo), rubber trees, and lower plants include bamboo and grasses; pinery and timber forests (mostly found in the area of Hod District) of which major plants include Pinus Kesiya Royle Ex Gordon (three-leaf pines), Lithocarpus Cantleyanus (Kor), Soloropyrum Wallichianum (Muad), Red zebra wood (Rak-yai), timbers, Shorea Siamensis (Rang), Dipterocarpus Intricatus (Hiang), Dipterocarpus Tuberculatus (Pluang), and lower plants include Dodonaca Viscosa (Ya-pek), Arundinaria Pusilla (Phai-jod), and other kinds of grasses.
Wild animals found in the National Park include gaur, deer, goral, Muliacus Muntjak, bears, gibbons, monkeys, langur, masked palm civets, rabbits, wild boars, and elephants, inhabiting in Om-koi Sanctuary, Dong Sam-muen and Mae-pai Forests, peacocks, pheasants, red jungle fowls, parrots, Gracula Religiosa, Trogon, hawks, woodpeckers, constrictors, pythons, cobras, monitor lizards, ground lizards, turtles, soft-shelled turtles, frogs, small green frogs, bull frogs, and fish in gullies and rivers, particularly Mae-jam River.

Doi Mae Tho Viewpoint
Doi Mae Tho National Park has been a well-known sightseeing spot since His Majesty the King has visited the National Park in 1980. Unfortunately, the former responsible unit (Water Source Development Unit 6) has recently lacked the budget and staff for maintenance of accommodations and the surroundings, therefore, flowers and plants are not as beautiful as they used to be. At present, the National Park is improving the sightseeing spot to regain its reputation and attractiveness.

Regarding the travelling route to the sightseeing spot, you may take Highway No.108 (Hot-Mae Sariang) until reaching Baan Kong-loi (km 54), then, make a right hand turn to Highway No.1270 and go straight on for 16 kilometers until reaching Ban Lao-li. Then, make a right hand turn to the National Park’s office, which is located approximately 500 meters away from the branch road. From the sightseeing spot, you will be impressed with the sea of fogs reaching the mountaintop of Doi Inthanon.

Mae-aep Waterfall
Mae-aep Waterfall is approximately 10-12 meters wide. The Waterfall is beautiful and attracts many tourists to visit in the dry season. The Waterfall is located approximately 6 km away from the National Park’s office. You may take the same route to the sightseeing spot until reaching Ban Mae-aep and take a branch road from Baan Mae-aeb for approximately 3 km until reaching the parking spot, then, travel on foot for approximately 1 km to the Waterfall.

Mae-lit Waterfall
Mae-lit Waterfall is approximately 8-10 meters wide and 12-15 meters high. The Waterfall is very beautiful and attracts many Thai and foreign tourists to visit in the dry season. Local people can make supplementary incomes from providing accommodations and services to the tourists. Regarding the travelling route to the Waterfall, you may take Highway No.108 (Hot-Mae Sariang) until reaching km 63, then, make a left hand turn to Ban Thung Lung and go straight on for approximately 12 km and travel on foot for approximately 500 meters to the Waterfall.

Rafting on the Mae Chaem River
To get to the starting point for rafting on the Mae Chaem River, you may take Highway No.108 (Mae Chaem – Ban Na-bangdin) and go straight on for approximately 6 km until reaching the Salak Hin Ranger Station. And you may go ashore when the raft reaches Ban Kong-pae, Tambon Tha-pha of Mae Chaem District, Chiang Mai Province.

Travelling activities along the route of Ban Mae-ping Noi, Sop Mae-tum, and Sop Huai Kong-pae. You may begin with travelling by a four-wheel-drive vehicle along the route of Ban Mae-ping Noi–Ban Om-raet, visit the Huai Mae-chuea Waterfall on the way to Ban Om-rat, and stay overnight on the side of Mae-tum River (the vehicle may be parked at the National Park’s headquarters). Then, you may visit Tham Luang Mae-tum, a cave which has beautiful pillar-shaped stalagmites and stalactites and being inhabited by a large number of bats. After that, you may travel by boat along Mae-tum River to visit natural cactus-shaped timber forests and mixed forests on both sides of Mae-tum River and you can see islets and reefs in Mae-tum River until reaching Sop Huai Mae-tum, where Mae-tum River meets Mae Chaem River, and finish with travelling by boat along Mae Chaem River to visit virgin mixed forests, since the vehicle route has not yet been opened for tourists. Interested tourists who need guides may directly contact officials of the National Park and prepare their own supplies.

Travelling activities along the route of Ban Mae-khan, Sop Mae-tum, and Sop Huai Kong-pae.
The route, which is suitable for rafting on the Mae Chaem River, starts from Mae-khan Checkpoint, Salak-hin Ranger Station passing Kaeng Sop-khan, Kaeng Kho-ma, Kaeng Tha-ruea, Kaeng Khot, Kaeng Luang, Kaeng Op, Hat Chiang-da, Wang Khwai-phueak, Ban Sop-long (where you can see beautiful cliffs and forests on both sides of Mae-jam River), Sob Mae-tum and finishes with rafting. The route is approximately 25 kilometers long and taking approximately 11-12 hours.

Geographical Features
The geographical features of the National Park consist of high mountains (500-1,708 meters above the medium sea level). Doi Pung-kia is the highest mountaintop (1,708 meters above the medium sea level), which is the source of Mae-khan River and Mae-Chaem River flowing into the Ping River.

Weather Condition
The weather at the National Park is cool and breezy throughout the year. The average highest temperature is 28„aC; the average lowest temperature is 18 C; and the average year-round temperature is 23„aC; meanwhile, the average rainfall is 1,380 mm/year.

Varieties of Plants and Wild Animals

There are various kinds of forests within the areas of the National Park, including virgin forests, which can be found on mountains at the altitude of at least 1,000 meters above the medium sea level located on the upper part of the National Park and on mountains separating the areas between Sa-merng District and Mae-Chaem District, and of which major plants include Lithocarpus Cantleyanus (Kor), Pinus Kesiya Royle Ex Gordon (three-leaf pines), Talo, Duabanga Sonneratioides (Toom-ten), Malacca tree, Michelia Alba, Dillenia Aurea Smith (Ma-san), Mammea Siamensis, Planchonelia Cambodiana (Nom-nang), etc; arid, evergreen forests, which can be found in the areas of valleys and gullies (600-1,000 meters above the medium sea level) and of which major plants include rubber trees, Malabar Ironwood, Mangifera Caloneura Kurz (wild mango), Paranephelium Longifoliolatum Lec., Baccaurea Ramiflora, Ficus Glomerata, etc.; pinery, which can be found on mountaintops at the altitude of 700-1,300 meters above the medium sea level, and of which major plants include Pinus Merkusii Jungh (two-leaf pines), Pinus Kesiya Royle Ex Gordon (three-leaf pines), Lithocarpus Cantleyanus (Kor), Calotropis Gigantea (Rak), Shorea Siamensis (Rang), Dipterocarpus Intricatus (Hiang), etc.; mixed forests, which can be found in the east of the National Park and of which major plants include teaks, Therm, Terminalia Chebula, Dioscorea Alata (Sao), Xylia Xylocarpa (redwood plants), Leguminosae (Pradoo), Desmodium Renifolium Schindl. (Seaw), Protium Serratum (Ma-fan), Gmelina Arborea (Sor), etc.; timber forests, which can be found on medium-high mountains, of which major plants include timbers, Shorea Siamensis (Rang), Dipterocarpus Intricatus (Hiang), Dipterocarpus Tuberculatus (Pluang), Pinus Merkusii Jungh (two-leaf pines), olives, Dioscorea Alata (Sao), Desmodium Renifolium Schindl. (Seaw), etc.
Wild animals found in the National Park include Muntiacus Muntjak, wild boars, red jungle fowls, porcupines, Asiatic wild dogs, foxes, pangolins, moles, squirrels, wild rabbits, flying squirrels, bats, masked palm civets, mongooses, monkeys, gibbons, tigers, goral, Great Hornbill, etc.

By Car
From the city of Chiang Mai, you may access the National Park in 2 routes, including
You may take Highway No.107 (Chiang Mai – Fang) for 16 km until reaching Mae-Chaem District, then, make a left hand turn to Highway No.1096 (Mae-rim – Sa-merng) and go straight on for 35 km until reaching Sa-merng District Office
You may take Highway No.108 (Chiang Mai – Mae-sariang) for 10 km, then, make a right hand turn before reaching Hang-dong District and go straight on Highway No.1296 for 48 km until reaching Sa-merng District Office. From Sa-merng District Office, go straight on Ror.Por.Chor. Road (Sa-merng – Watjan) for 18 km until reaching the temporary office of the National Park.

Pha Sa-merng Km.24-25 Viewpoint
The sightseeing spot is located on the side of Sa-merng – Mae-rim Road (km24-km25) in Sub-District Sa-merng Tai of Sa-merng District, Chiang Mai


Luang Mae Sab Cave
Mae-sab cave is a medium-sized 2-step cave (approximately 150 meters deep), situated at Baan Mae-sab, Sub-District Sa-merng, Sa-merng District, Chiang Mai. And there are stalagmites, stalactites, and stone benches inside the cave.


Huai Tad Waterfall
Huai Tad Waterfall is a medium-sized 2-step waterfall (10 meters and 30 meters high) with the flowing water throughout the year, situated at Ban Khun Sab-tai, Sub-District Mae-sab, Sa-merng District, Chiang Mai Province.

Huai Mae Na-pur Waterfall
Huai Mae Na-pur Waterfall is a medium-sized 7-step waterfall (5-15 meters high) with the flowing water throughout the year, situated at Ban Om-long, Sub-District Mae-sab, Sa-merng District, Chiang Mai Province

Pha Mae Chaem Km.36-55 Viewpoint
The sightseeing spots are located on both sides of Sa-merng Watjan Road (km36-km55), extending on the mountain ridge, which separates Sa-merng District and Mae-Chaem District.

Pha Sam-na
Pha Sam-na is a 3-side cliff on a mountaintop (1,253 meters above the sea level) inhabited by flocks of goral. Pha Sam-na is situated at Baan Sob Pha-luang, Sub-District Mae-najorn of Mae-Chaem District, Chiang Mai Province.

Nuture Trial
The office of the National Park is situated on the side of Sa-merng กV Watjan Road (km18) at Baan Mae-khan, Sub-District Mae-sab of Sa-merng District, Chiang Mai Province . There are artesian springs emerging from underground of Mae-tho River. The water temperature is 38„aC. The National Park has provided a route for natural study, starting from the National Parkกฆs office, passing timber forest, mixed forest, arid, evergreen forest, and two-leaf pinery until reaching Sob Nam Mae-tho V Nam Mae Bor-kaew, then, going upstream of Mae Bor-kaew River passing a giant Malabar Ironwood. There are small reefsalong the River. In addition, there are many small-sized waterfalls and cliffs along the route, which finishes at the Hot Springs.
